Dia is the project of composer and performer, Danielle Birrittella.  Her debut EP, TINY OCEAN, was released with MANIMAL RECORDS and features songs produced by producer/drummer Joey Waronker (Beck, REM, Atoms for Peace) and Tim Carr (The Americans, HAIM). Raised on a Hindu ashram, she sang ceremonial ragas as a child, which led to training and performing as an opera singer throughout the U.S. and Europe. Along these travels, she began writing songs on a ukulele. Dia's lush baroque-pop sound incorporates vocal pedals and etherial vocal textures abstracted by organic percussion, electric guitars, ukulele, tiple, cellos, and drones. Her live performance of Covered In Light was recently featured on NPR's Tiny Desk Contest.

A native of New England, and a graduate of New York University (BA) and California Institute of the Arts (MFA), she has lived and worked as an artist in New York, France, and Italy. Performances have included Disney Hall's REDCAT - Los Angeles, La Musica Lirica - Italy, The Chautauqua Institute - New York, La Main d'Or - Paris, The Ludwig Foundation - Cuba and the LAX Festival. Upcoming performance projects include SAND/BOX, ALL THE PRETTY LITTLE HORSES, and SONNETS TO ORPHEUS - a song cycle featuring the scores of 12 composers who set Rainer Maria Rilke's sonnets to music for string quartet, voice and video projection.

SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING

Summertime is coming and i don't mind if you, i don't mind if you,
come back and see me for a while.
Winter's got me weeping, so i don't mind if you come.
Every time you,
walk by my window, I'm crying over you.

We shared an island, I was just a girl then, you were the everyboy.
Riding around me playing marco polo, singing songs we both know, in each city that was mine, I cried, over you, on your day, miles away, next to me,
carrying all of our weight into the sea.

See me, spinning in polka dots around you,
but you keep missing me by millimeters as you stay,
on your day,
miles away, next to me, carrying all of our weight into the sea.

St. Paul

Rise over there baby.
The sun will be our heads.
Baby lay there laughing.
Shine and we'll be dead,
next to crying stars.
Maybe baby.

TINY OCEAN

Tie a knot around my tiny ocean
Hammer me to every wall you build
Light me up when all the fields are empty.

Break my back with all the weight you carry,
lead me down a road where I can’t see.

I remember how you touched me,
put me up against your body.
You were never gonna hurt me,
I was always yours for taking.

Burn me with your brightness
Watch me rise, weightless
On the edge of worlds with you.
I am freely falling in your shadow.

Covered In Light

Last night we fell down the path.
You took my arms in your arms.
We were like lovers in love.
You kept the sky from falling down on me.

Last night we walked through the dream.
Your mouth was covered in light.
I knew you thousands of years.
Just like they say we all come back again.
